Keynote: Social Work and Human-Animal Support Services: A One Health Collaboration Opportunity

A Talk by Janet Hoy-Gerlach PhD, LISW-S (Associate Professor, University of Toledo)

About this Talk

The practice of veterinary social work attends to the human needs that emerge in human-animal relationships and interactions. Within animal welfare, there is a type of service called “human-animal support services” that similarly seeks to address human needs within human-animal relationships, with the overarching goal of animal homelessness prevention. Both approaches involve advocacy, education, and linkage to needed supports to help keep people in poverty and their animal companions together; leveraging such efforts via a One Health approach offers tremendous opportunity for improvement in human and animal well-being
