CAPT/Dr. Hugh Mainzer is a Supervisory Preventive Medicine Officer/Team leader assigned at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, GA. He currently works in CDC’s Center for Preparedness and Response as a member of the Division of State and Local Readiness. While assigned at CDC, he has served as a Deputy Associate Director in CDC’s National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH). Dr Mainzer has previously worked in the NCEH Division of Emergency and Environmental Health Services (including service as acting Environmental Health Services Branch chief), CDC’s National Immunization Program/Immunization Services Division, and as an Epidemic Intelligence Service officer assigned to the Pennsylvania Department of Health. As the Ninth Chief Veterinary Officer of the United States Public Health Service between 2007 and 2011, CAPT Mainzer had collateral duty responsibilities for providing leadership and coordination of veterinary professional affairs for the Office of the Surgeon General and the US Department of Health and Human Services Though an actively licensed Veterinarian, Hugh also has certification and field experience as a human Emergency Medical Technician/Paramedic and HAZMAT Technician, as well as involvement with delivery of sustainable community health services, Dr Mainzer has gained progressive ‘do-ership’ and leadership experience during major public health emergencies responses dating back to 1992. In 2015, CAPT Mainzer completed Harvard University’s National Preparedness Leadership Initiative Program and in 2013, FEMA’s National Emergency Management Executive Academy as a member of its first cohort. CAPT Mainzer continues to be a strong advocate for the application of initiatives, programs, and activities designed to integrate clinical and scientific proficiencies with the practices of all public health professionals, human and animal care providers, and emergency managers.
